Welcome to the Breeders Award Program of the Fort Wayne Aquarium Society
Through the BAP, we measure our advancement as aquarists as we gain the necessary knowledge and skill to allow the species we keep to reproduce. Our purposes are to encourage more participation among the members of our club, to recognize outstanding achievements, and to share knowledge of breeding techniques. This is a noncompetitive program which recognizes all members equally according to their ability and willingness to experiment, without regard to the size of the setup or any time limits. All points earned are cumulative over an indefinite period of time.
(This Breeders Award Program covers freshwater fish, marine fish, corals, invertebrates, and plants.)

Breeder of the Year Award
An annual award is presented to the hobbyist who has bred the most fish, plants and/or corals in a year and who, in the view of the BAP Committee, has demonstrated devotion to expanding the species through generosity, patience, and support of the club. Examples include donating fry to other members and helping other breeders. The BAP Chairperson reserves the right not to present this award if it is believed that no one person has clearly met these qualifications in a given year.
Claiming Points
When you have spawned your fish, they must be “witnessed”; that is, a member of the Breeder Award Program will come to your home, when possible, to inspect the fry and parents and verify the species within 7 days of the time they become free swimming. A committee member will revisit to verify the fry are alive 60 days after free swimming or fry may be brought to a club meeting after 60 days. In some cases virtual visits will be utilized.
A minimum of six (6) fry will be considered a spawn, if maintained for 60 days. Special consideration will be given to fish that are less prolific and to Junior members, upon request of the breeder to the committee, to waive the six (6) fish minimum.
Marine fish will be 20 point fish if the fry are free swimming for 30 days.
Corals and plants – a committee member must be notified immediately and the committee member must inspect the “cutting” within 7 days. The “cutting” must be re-visited to determine reasonable growth within 60 days of original viewing. Floating plants; by doubling the amount; bunch plants, by doubling the number of rooted growing stems; runner or divided plants must have one healthy plant capable of living independently. Sexual reproduction: the flowerings must be identified in full bloom attached to the parent plant. For seeded plants, there must be a healthy seedling sufficiently developed to be identified as the offspring of the parent plant.
Plants must have a viable offspring or grow offshoots that develop root systems. Acceptable methods are by cuttings, offshoots, runners, or plantlets that develop their own root systems and can survive on their own, flowering or seed production, and by flower pollination from the members own plant.
All requirements must be completed within 4 months after a BAP committee person witnessed breeding. If not completed, the spawn is not eligible for the BAP.
You must be a member in good standing with FWAS.
Points may be obtained only once per species of fish/coral invertebrate/plant. If a fish has been reclassified under a different scientific name, it will not count as a new species. Color variations do not count as a separate species. Different Latin name counts as a different species. Points may be awarded to families or couples and to individuals, but not to both. It is the breeder’s responsibility to complete all necessary forms, verify that the forms are submitted, the proper points are recorded and that the spawns are verified.
Partnerships on points or family membership in Breeders Award Program: the points will only be awarded to the family group or to one (1) member.

- You must be a member in good standing of FWAS (Fort Wayne Aquarium Society) to participate.

Color variations do not count as separate species. A different Latin species name does count as a different species. (For example: Discus – Symphysodon aequifasciatus “Pigeon Blood” and Symphysodon aequifasciatus “Gold Dragon” count as the same species (same Latin name); but Corydoras metae and Corydoras melini count as different species.)
- Points may be awarded to families or couples or to individuals, but not to both for the same spawn. (Family or partner teams can pool points, or one member can claim them, but the same spawn cannot be counted twice.)
- It is the breeder’s responsibility to complete all necessary forms, ensure that forms are submitted, that the proper points are recorded, and that spawns are verified by the committee.
- For partnerships or family memberships in the Breeders Award Program: points will only be awarded once – either to the family group as a whole or to one (1) member of the partnership/family.
Assigning & Challenging Points
- Species not listed in the program that an aquarist plans to spawn should be brought to the BAP Chairperson’s attention. The Chairperson will present the specifics to the committee for discussion. The committee, by majority vote, will assign appropriate point values for that species.
- It is recognized that new discoveries, new importations of fish, published documents, etc. can change the difficulty of breeding certain species. Point values may therefore be reviewed and changed periodically by the committee (by majority vote), and any changes will be publicized to the membership (e.g. in the club newsletter or website).
- If the point value for a species is changed, the new point value will apply going forward (previously earned points for that species are not adjusted retroactively).
- The Breeder Award Program year will start in September and end with the July Board meeting. Spawns in July and August will be recognized in September.
- If a member has a lapse in membership, their previously accumulated points will be reinstated when they rejoin (pending available records). Spawns that occurred while not a member will not count for points; point accumulation restarts upon becoming a member in good standing again.
- The BAP Committee has the right to extend any time and/or date limits in the rules at its discretion.
- The BAPS program will retroactively assign points that are provable, documented or otherwise witnessed starting from May of 2023
Assigning of Points
Rationale
Point values for species are assigned based on several factors:
- The type of organism (fish, coral, invertebrate, plant).
- Water chemistry and environmental requirements (temperature, pH, salinity, etc.).
- Feeding requirements (difficulty of providing appropriate diet for fry).
- Difficulty in spawning/breeding the species.
- Difficulty in raising the offspring to a viable, independent stage.
In general
- 5 points – Species that can basically breed over a wide range of conditions, largely on their own without special intervention. Examples: guppy, platy.
- 10 points – Species that can be bred easily given specific conditions which are not too exacting. Examples: barbs which breed readily when well conditioned, zebra danios given low water level and a marbled bottom tank, or an African mbuna cichlid that breeds easily given alkaline water, good food, and some protection from aggression.
- 15 points – Species which may present moderate difficulties in one or more areas (aggressive behavior, specialized water chemistry, specific diet requirements or mate selection/sexing issues, poor fry survival or disease susceptibility, special tank setup requirements, etc.). Example: Angelfish – may have sexing challenges, an aggressive nature, and can be challenging for providing proper brood care.
- 20 points – Species that have not been bred before, are bred only very rarely, or are very difficult to breed due to the severity of issues mentioned above. Examples: Black Ghost Knifefish, Neon Tetras, and most marine fish species.
- 10 points will be added for any Cares species successfully bred.
Breeders Award Committee
- The Breeders Award Committee consists of a Chairperson and an even number of other members. The Chairperson and all committee members are approved and appointed by the FWAS Board of Directors.
- Duties of the Committee: Witness spawns and plant cuttings; keep official records and point totals; report to the Board as needed; publicize committee activities and member accomplishments; order certificates and awards as needed; and make necessary presentations at meetings.
- As soon as your fish spawn, or plant or coral reproduces, notify the BAP Committee Chairperson (contact information to be provided by FWAS). A committee member will then arrange to witness and record the spawn/propagation.
(FWAS will appoint Committee members to oversee various areas such as Freshwater Fish, Marine/Coral, and Aquatic Plants as the program progresses.)
